Drain Rehabilitation - The Hardest Jobs And Choosing The Right Workman

The maintenance of drainage systems requires constant management, structure replacements and preliminary investigations, which all cost a whole lot of money and bearing that cost are not always substantial for private property owners, sometimes even the public sectors. Hence, it is a standard practice to use cost-effective and fast drainage inspection, and ways to extend the life of the drainage and collection infrastructure by endorsing rehabilitation projects for existing pipes and manholes. Here’s an overview of the greatest challenges and plausible solutions.

Wastewater And Drain Rehabilitation

In order to maintain the condition of drainage and sewage systems, the most crucial task is to remove the solid material, silt and debris. It is highly recommended for sewage drains to be cleaned at least 6months after, for rainy and storm-prone areas like Ireland it is advisable to clean drains or conduct any rehabilitation jobs before and after the rainy seasons. Unlined channels have the problem of growing vegetations that can damage the structure if not cleaned frequently. Wastewater management is also a hard challenge. We don’t realise the amount of wastewater we create in our day to day bathing, washing dishes, laundering, using the toilet etc. While organic matters, can be biodegradable to a great extent, others, especially solid wastes like plastic cannot be degraded easily.

The burgeoning population of Ireland puts a growing strain on the development of wastewater infrastructure. Reformations such as the planned upgrading of the Ringsend Waste Water Treatment Plant in 2005, catered to over 1.6 million people in Dublin. Right now it is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Ireland. But such reform is still insufficient to solve the growing problems.

A planned methodology of systematic structural repair, small improvements in system capacity and frequent surveys are a great way to abort the need for one large rehabilitation project. The methods include :

Chemical grouting - the most significant type of non-structural repair for manholes

Internal Mechanical Seals for Pipes - that can anticipate vibration and slight misalignments in the pipeline

Cured-in-Place Pipe - the most talked about trenchless repair system for pipelines - this is a type of lining of a resin impregnated flexible sock made of polyester that is winched into the pipe to support against slight misalignments and irregularity within the pipe contour.

Coating and Manhole Benching- cement or polymer coatings are used to seal the manhole bench and prevent loose materials and grease from accumulating between the bench and the manhole walls and invert.

Things To Consider Before Going For A Rehabilitation Project For Drainage Systems

While the mentioned solutions are not the ultimate solutions. There are many other options for maintaining the ageing drainage infrastructure in different Irish cities. It is a fact that the collection systems are deteriorating constantly, while adequate funding for their maintenance is scarce. The brighter perspective comes across more and more economic and flexible options for no-dig survey systems and cheaper, more substantial labour-intensive methods. Technology like CCTV survey and chemical injection and trenchless procedures is the way to be for now.
